Doing Business

Smith Warehouse

“It's a blast when everyone is on the same page.”

One business I'm proud to have worked with is Smith. I spent a day in a new warehouse they had built. They wanted to show their facilities off to potential clients. I had the full cooperation of the warehouse manager, and the PR people at Smith, so it ended up a fun experience. I got to move around this giant building with my camera, while the manager directed a building full of employees for their "scenes". It's a blast when everyone is on the same page.

Construction

I've also worked on a few construction projects. I would try and capture the groundbreaking, all the way to the finish.

I had to be present at the pouring of the concrete slab for each of these, which is done overnight. I would arrive after midnight, and do my best to catch interesting angles while staying out of the way of the workers. I coordinated with the project manager who was on site for pour.

This is the type of project where it's not particularly challenging, it's more being reliable about getting basic coverage. At the end of months of filming, I turned everything into a short highlight reel. It was originally done as a promotional tool for the construction company, but as it turned out, the companies that moved into the buildings really enjoyed having a video that showed their building being built.

Baybrook Mall

A few years ago Baybrook Mall in Friendswood Texas did a pretty big expansion. Added a big outdoor area, park area and movie screen for families, and a ton of new stores and restaurants. They called me on a Thursday, and let me know that they needed a video showing off the new area done by Monday morning. Investor call or something was coming, and they wanted something slick to show off. So, I got my stuff together and spent Friday evening going around showing off crowds and certain stores. We needed a few extras to use as customers for close up shots, so the manager I was working with got a bunch of her friends dressed up and down there to pretend to shop. It was a thing navigating crowds of people while still getting good video, but I had fun doing it.
